I went to Josh's concert in June. It's the second tour of his I've been to and even better than the first one I saw. He goes out into the audience and mingles with the fans, answers text messages sent by people in the audience and also had a smaller stage at the opposite end of the arena so he could reach as many people as possible.

Nice. Not many artists will mingle like that.

Josh is one of these celebrities who tends to stay out of the spotlight unless he's promoting an album.

Because he's a classical crossover singer, he doesn't get a lot of radio play, so most of his promotion is TV appearances, most of which are concerts on PBS.

Most of the material he's recorded has been songs sung in foreign languages. Of his English language songs, You Raise Me Up is his signature song.

His new album, Illuminations, is a "love it" or "hate it" album amongst his fans. He parted ways with producer David Foster and hooked up with legendary rock producer Rick Rubin, who chose to tone down the bombast of Josh's previous albums. Many of the songs are just Josh, a piano, and the occasional subtle violin or acoustic guitar in the background. Many of the tracks were recorded in one take, which is something that many artists these days would have trouble pulling off because many of them cannot sing without the crutches of various instruments, fluff and computerization. Because he wrote or co-wrote most of the tracks, it feels far more personal and more like the work of a songwriter than a singer. The more and more I listen to the album, the more and more I love it.
