Will the music die? 1 Year, 6 Months ago
In its relative infancy now, I believe Internet radio it will become a major source of news and entertainment in the future. It stands to reason. A bunch of petty bureaucrats must not be allowed to squash it like an ant. I hope that commonsense will prevail, but listeners need to get active. I read that many people have contacted their reps in Congress, and now their senators. I hope that the day of silence on June 26 07 will alert people to the very real prospect of losing their favourite station.

I live in Oz, so feel powerless to do much. Our broadband is so pathetic that I don't think any politician here has ever listened to an Internet radio station.

I just know I would be so much the poorer if I could no longer listen to Soft'nEasy. Good luck!

Thanks for your support! The House Small Business Committee will be holding a hearing on June 28. From a U.S. House media advisory:

"The House Committee on Small Business will hold a hearing entitled 'Assessing the Impact of the Copyright Royalty Board Decision to Increase Royalty Rates on Recording Artists and Webcasters.' Small Webcasters that provide daily music entertainment to individuals nationwide will be at risk of going silent on July 15, after an increase in royalty rates from the Copyright Royalty Board (CR comes into effect.

"The hearing will examine the decision to raise rates, the impact it will have on Internet Radio, and the challenges of providing fair compensation for copyright owners while maintaining a business environment that allow small Webcasters to thrive.

"The committee will hear testimony from various Internet Radio outlets, as well as music artists that stand on both sides of the issue...

"When: Thursday, June 28 10 a.m.
Where: 2360 Rayburn House Office Building"

I'd just say "the heck with it". Becoming a local broadcast station would be nearly impossible. There are no available frequencies in my area, not even anything for low power stations. Even if there was, it would be a financial and paperwork nightmare. I could legally broadcast on AM at 1 milliwatt. That MIGHT cover a half mile or so depending on the antenna. I could do FM legally also, but I'd only cover the same distance. And I certainly don't have thousands or millions to throw at an existing station. Oh well. Let's see what happens.
